Une plateforme unique au monde

S’efforçant d’élucider les syndromes asthmatiques équins, Dr Lavoie a mis en place une plateforme animale unique puisqu’elle permet des études longitudinales prolongées (mois/années) où de multiples paramètres (de la physiologie jusqu'à l'expression génique) sont étudiés de façon répétée sur le même animal.

L'expertise que le laboratoire du Dr Lavoie a développée est reconnue nationalement et à l'étranger comme le témoignent ses collaborations avec des chercheurs canadiens, américains, européens, chinois et brésiliens et ses partenaires industriels internationaux.

Le laboratoire de recherche du Dr Lavoie détient des subventions de fonctionnement des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (IRSC), du Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG), et à récemment obtenu un financement de la Fondation canadienne pour l'innovation (FCI), témoignant de l'importance de ce modèle animal et de ses travaux.

 

                                                   

Horses

Heaves is a debilitating and incurable disease, often difficult to manage by their owners. We maintain a herd of heaves-affected horses that have been donated to us. Our expertise and infrastructure allow them the best medical care available.

Physical infrastructure

Dr. Lavoie has 2 large, modern laboratories (2007) allocated to his research, and has access to 2 adjacent tissue culture facilities. These laboratories are located at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FMV), UdeM.

Specialized facilities and equipment

Dr. Lavoie was awarded a CFI grant in 2012 to acquire novel technologies (including videoendoscopy, endobronchial ultrasonography, impulse oscillometry, whole slide stereology) to investigate horses for translational human studies. The equine lung function laboratory is located at the research farm of the FMV, which has the capacity to house 38 horses. Additional specialized animal procedures are also performed at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the FMV, which is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic, and imaging facilities. The core facilities of the FMV include transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle size analyzer, and ultracentrifuges required for the study of exosomes.

Equine Tissue Bank

We also have access to >1000 samples from 150 well-characterized horses with asthma and controls from the Equine Respiratory Tissue Bank directed by Dr. Lavoie and coordonated by Dr. Vargas. The development of the bank was made possible by the support of the The Respiratory Health Network of the FRQS, Dr. Eric Rousseau (Université de Sheerbroke), Yvan Fortier and Josiane Lefebvre-Lavoie. 

Technical Support 

Animal and lab technicians, provide training and assistance with the experiments in the lab and with horses. A full-time statistician at the FMV assists with data processing and analysis.
